JOHNJOHN98 was founded in 2004 by John T. Harpster, after he came up with an idea in 2002, and started his private homepage in 2003. The name "John John" comes from John T. Harpster, and the 98 was named after from Microsoft Windows 98, and the year 1998, and JOHNJOHN98 is also sometimes called jj98. It is based in San Diego, California, USA.

John T. Harpster had been web writer and designer since 2003. Harpster worked on JOHNJOHN98 in late 2003, after Legosville.net was started. JOHNJOHN98 was launched on February 15, 2004 by Sablewing. It was edited with web editor HotDog, and later CoffeeCup HTML editor. JOHNJOHN98 started its first division JJ98 Films, and plans to get Robotman into a first lego film, but it was never made. In 2005, John T. Harpster released a first and only Orbiter addon Testsat. In 2007, JOHNJOHN98 added a logo with gears reflecting. Also, JOHNJOHN98 added its lego page including the X-78, X-77, and Legosville. In January 2008, the JOHNJOHN98 site updated the site with Drupal. In June 2008, JOHNJOHN98 published a first artcale. In September 2008, JOHNJOHN98 published some television shows articles. It also publish some sports articles in July 2009. On September 20, 2009, the JOHNJOHN98 was renamed from jj98.org to johnjohn98.org.
